Understanding a Blood-Filled Bump on the Skin

A small pocket of blood can form when friction, pressure, pinching, or a minor injury damages vessels beneath the skin while the surface stays intact. Such a blood blister often looks red, purple, or nearly black. A scratched or shaved bump may also bleed into itself.

Other raised lesions can resemble a blood blister. Inflamed hair follicles may form tender bumps, while some harmless vascular growths bleed easily when rubbed. Rashes such as folliculitis, heat rash, keratosis pilaris, lichen planus, and milia have different typical patterns; a blood-filled appearance by itself does not establish any of these diagnoses.

Leave the roof of an intact blister in place because it protects the skin underneath. Clean the area gently and use a soft dressing where shoes, clothing, sports equipment, or tools cause rubbing. Avoid popping it, picking at it, or applying acids and freezing products before you know what it is.

If the bump opens, let fluid drain without squeezing, rinse with clean water, and apply a non-stick dressing. Keep track of new bumps, itch, pain, warmth, pus, and any trigger. A clinician can choose treatment only after determining whether the bump is inflammatory, infectious, traumatic, or another type of lesion.

Book an examination if there was no clear injury, the bump keeps returning, does not heal, becomes firmer or larger, develops irregular colour, or bleeds with little contact. Increasing tenderness, spreading redness, warmth, cloudy drainage, red streaking, or fever calls for prompt assessment because infection may be present.

Get urgent medical help if brisk bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling expands quickly, pain becomes severe, or you feel weak or faint. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, reduced immune function, or medicines that affect clotting when speaking with the care team.

You might ask whether the bump is a blister or another growth, what features led to that opinion, and whether a swab, dermoscopic examination, or tissue sample is needed. Also clarify which dressing to use, which activities to modify, and what change should prompt another appointment.
