A Blood-Coloured Bump on the Skin

The bump may contain trapped blood after minor trauma, arise from an inflamed follicle, or represent a growth with surface blood vessels. Colour and bleeding alone cannot distinguish these possibilities.

Check whether it is soft or firm, smooth or rough, fluid-filled or solid, and whether it hurts, itches or crusts. A bump centred on a hair after shaving can accompany follicle inflammation, while many tiny rough bumps follow a different pattern. These features guide an examination but do not provide a diagnosis at home.

Bleeding after the bump catches on clothing differs from bleeding without contact. Growth, irregular colour, an open sore and repeated crusting are changes worth recording. Take a well-lit photograph beside a ruler and avoid relying on image searches to label it.

If it bleeds, apply steady pressure with clean gauze. Once bleeding stops, rinse gently and cover areas that rub against clothing. Do not squeeze, cut, burn, freeze or tie off an unidentified bump; home removal can cause infection, scarring and delayed diagnosis.

Write down when it appeared and whether an injury, bite, shaving or new product preceded it. Keep photographs showing change and list any medicines that affect bleeding. A clinician may inspect the bump with magnification and decide whether observation, treatment or a sample is appropriate.

Get urgent help if bleeding remains heavy despite firm pressure, or if you feel faint or unwell. Seek prompt review for spreading redness, warmth, pus, severe pain or fever. Book a skin examination if the bump grows quickly, changes shape or colour, bleeds repeatedly without clear injury, forms an ulcer, fails to heal or is accompanied by unexplained bruising elsewhere.

Ask what features suggest the likely category of bump, whether monitoring is reasonable, and whether tissue testing is needed before removal. If treatment is offered, ask how it may affect scarring or skin colour and what changes should trigger follow-up.
