Blocked nose and throat irritation: what to know

When the nasal lining swells, air may pass less freely and you may breathe through your mouth. That dries the throat and can create a tickle, scratchiness or itch. A common cold may add cough, tiredness or a mild fever. Allergic rhinitis often causes sneezing, clear mucus, itchy eyes and an itchy throat after exposure to pollen, dust or animals. House dust mite allergy can produce symptoms indoors. Food allergy may cause throat symptoms soon after eating and is concerning when swelling, hives, vomiting or breathing difficulty appears.

Sip water often, use warm fluids if soothing, and avoid smoke, incense, strong fragrances and very dry air. Saline spray can moisturise the nasal passages; follow the instructions for any rinse carefully. Try to identify whether symptoms follow a food, room, season or cleaning activity. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss allergy medication when an allergic pattern is present and check for medicine interactions. Avoid using someone else’s prescription treatment.

Call emergency services for sudden throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, widespread hives, or difficulty swallowing after food or medicine. Arrange medical review for persistent hoarseness, repeated episodes, severe pain, fever with deterioration, or nasal blockage that disrupts sleep. Seek advice sooner if a child is struggling to drink or seems unusually sleepy.
