What should you know about bloating indigestion gas?

Short answer
Bloating, indigestion and gas can overlap after eating, yet persistent, painful or changing symptoms may need assessment for reflux or another digestive problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Separate the symptoms
- Describe fullness, belching, wind, burning, nausea and pain individually.
- Medication check
- List prescribed, over-the-counter and herbal products.
How these symptoms connect
Bloating is a feeling of pressure or fullness; gas may cause belching or passing wind; indigestion can include upper abdominal discomfort, early fullness, nausea or burning. Eating quickly, fizzy drinks, constipation and food triggers can contribute. Acid Reflux, Gastritis, Hiatus Hernia, Gallstones, Peptic Ulcer and Helicobacter Pylori Infection can present with some of these symptoms. Their presence cannot be inferred from bloating or gas alone.
Practical relief
Try smaller meals, slower eating and careful chewing. Limit fizzy drinks, avoid lying down soon after meals and note foods that repeatedly trigger symptoms. Gentle walking may help gas move through the bowel. Review medicines with a clinician or pharmacist before stopping them; some pain medicines can irritate the stomach. Acid Reflux Medication may be appropriate for some people, but recurring indigestion should not be self-managed indefinitely.
Get medical help when
Arrange a review for symptoms that persist, recur often, worsen or affect eating, sleep or normal activity. Mention vomiting, difficulty swallowing, anaemia symptoms, appetite loss, weight loss or black stools. Seek urgent care for chest pain, vomiting blood, sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, a rigid swollen abdomen or breathlessness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit reflux, indigestion or a gallbladder problem, and whether testing or a medicine review is needed. Bring the timing of meals, symptoms, bowel pattern and all medicines, including anti-inflammatory painkillers.
