Bloating and heart palpitations: what to know

Short answer
Bloating and heart palpitations can happen together because digestion, stress, dehydration, blood sugar changes or an underlying health problem may affect how your heartbeat feels.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Palpitations
- A noticeable racing, pounding, fluttering or irregular heartbeat sensation
- Track
- Timing, duration, triggers, rhythm sensation and accompanying symptoms
- Emergency signs
- Chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or persistent fast or irregular heartbeat
What this combination can mean
Bloating often follows gas, constipation, eating quickly, food intolerance or a large meal. Palpitations are sensations such as racing, pounding, fluttering or skipped beats; they can be noticed more strongly when the abdomen feels full or uncomfortable. The two symptoms may share a trigger without one directly causing the other.
Other possibilities include dehydration, anxiety, low blood sugar, an overactive thyroid or anaemia. An irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation can also cause palpitations. Breathlessness, swelling in the legs or ongoing abdominal swelling needs assessment because it can occur with heart failure. These symptoms alone cannot identify their cause.
What you can do now
Sit quietly, loosen tight clothing and notice when the episode began, how long it lasted and whether the heartbeat felt regular or uneven. Sip fluids if you may be dehydrated, unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and large meals while symptoms are active. Gentle walking may help gas, but stop if it worsens the heartbeat or makes you feel unwell.
Arrange a medical appointment if episodes recur, last longer than usual, disturb sleep or occur with fatigue, weight change, diarrhoea, constipation or heavier-than-usual bleeding. A clinician may review medicines and supplements and check your pulse, blood pressure, heart rhythm, blood count, thyroid function, glucose and hydration.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help now for palpitations with chest pain or pressure, severe or new breathlessness, fainting, near-fainting, confusion, marked weakness or a grey or blue appearance. Urgent assessment is also needed when a fast or irregular heartbeat does not settle with rest, or when severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a rigid swollen abdomen or inability to pass stool or gas accompanies the bloating.
Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell. If symptoms have stopped but were intense, record what happened and contact a healthcare professional promptly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could my medicines, supplements, caffeine or eating pattern be contributing? Does my pulse need an ECG or a longer rhythm monitor? Should I be checked for anaemia, thyroid disease, glucose changes or dehydration? What symptoms should prompt emergency care, and what is a safe plan for managing recurring bloating?

Questions people ask
Can bloating cause heart palpitations?
Bloating may make heartbeat sensations more noticeable, especially after a large meal, but recurrent palpitations can have separate causes and should be assessed.
Should I worry about bloating with a racing heartbeat?
Seek emergency help if the symptoms include chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion or a heartbeat that stays fast or irregular despite rest.
What conditions can be checked when these symptoms recur?
A clinician may consider dehydration, anaemia, low blood sugar, thyroid disease, anxiety and heart-rhythm problems after reviewing your history and examination.
