Bloated Stomach and Bleeding Between Periods

These symptoms can have separate causes or arise from the same gynaecological problem. A clinician can check the timing and amount of bleeding, pregnancy possibility, medicines, infections, and pelvic symptoms before deciding which examinations or tests are appropriate.

Bleeding between periods may be linked to hormonal changes, contraception, infection, cervical changes, endometrial polyps, or uterine fibroids. Fibroids and some pelvic conditions can also create pressure, fullness, or abdominal swelling. Less commonly, cancers of the cervix or womb may present with unusual vaginal bleeding, so persistent or recurrent bleeding should not be ignored. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Bloating may instead come from digestion, constipation, or food-related changes and happen at the same time by coincidence. The pattern matters: note whether swelling settles after passing stool or gas, whether bleeding follows sex, and whether there is discharge, pelvic pain, urinary pressure, or a change in bowel habits.

Arrange a medical appointment if the bleeding is unexplained, returns, or the bloating does not settle. Record the dates, colour and flow of bleeding, any clots, your usual cycle, pain location, abdominal swelling, contraception, and medicines. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test because bleeding with pelvic or abdominal symptoms changes how urgently you should be assessed.

At the visit, assessment may include a pregnancy test, pelvic examination, infection testing, blood tests, or pelvic imaging, depending on your history. Do not stop prescribed hormonal contraception or other medicines without discussing the safest next step with the prescriber.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, severe or sudden abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or vomiting that prevents fluids staying down. Get prompt assessment if you may be pregnant and have bleeding with one-sided pain, dizziness, or faintness.

Book a timely clinic visit for repeated bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, persistent bloating, increasing abdominal size, pelvic pressure, unusual discharge, or symptoms that interfere with daily activities.

Ask what might explain both symptoms, whether pregnancy or infection testing is needed, and whether a pelvic examination or ultrasound would help.
