Blisters Under the Skin on Your Hands: What to Know

Tiny, intensely itchy bubbles along the sides of the fingers or palms can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Blisters may also follow contact with an irritant or allergen, friction, a burn, or an infection. Their appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Notice whether the fluid-filled spots itch, burn, hurt, or form after exposure to gloves, detergents, metals, plants, heat, or repeated rubbing. Dyshidrotic eczema often presents with clusters of deep, itchy hand blisters, while contact dermatitis may produce redness, scaling, swelling, and blisters where the skin touched a trigger.

A painful grouped rash on one side, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or cloudy drainage suggests a different process and deserves prompt assessment. Avoid diagnosing an infection by appearance because several rashes can look alike.

Do not deliberately pop the blisters. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, apply a fragrance-free moisturiser, and cover any broken area with a clean non-stick dressing. A cool compress can settle itching. Remove rings if swelling starts, and reduce contact with suspected products until the skin is assessed.

Use protective gloves for wet work, with a soft cotton layer beneath if sweating worsens irritation. Photograph changes and note recent products or activities; this can help a clinician identify a pattern.

Arrange medical review if blisters recur, interfere with sleep or hand use, spread, or do not settle with gentle care. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe pain, fever, red streaks, rapidly expanding redness, pus, or extensive peeling. People with reduced immunity or poor circulation should seek earlier advice for broken or infected-looking skin.
