Sunburn blisters: care, healing, and warning signs

Move out of the sun and use a cool damp cloth or cool shower. Do not apply ice directly, and do not intentionally burst the blisters. Further ultraviolet exposure can aggravate injured skin even after the initial heat sensation fades.

Ultraviolet radiation injures skin cells and triggers inflammation. With more intense injury, fluid separates layers of skin and forms blisters. Redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, and later peeling may accompany them. Symptoms can continue developing after leaving the sun, so reassess the affected area and how you feel overall.

A sharply exposed distribution supports sunburn, but blistering confined beneath a product, worsening after a medicine, or appearing on covered skin may have another explanation. Mention those details if you seek care.

After cooling, pat the skin dry and wear loose soft clothing. Sip fluids regularly. A bland fragrance-free moisturiser may soothe intact surrounding skin; avoid greasy products while the skin still feels hot because they can trap heat. If a blister opens by itself, wash gently, retain attached skin, and cover the raw area with a sterile non-stick dressing. Replace a wet or dirty dressing. Stay out of direct sun while healing and use clothing for coverage; newly healed skin remains easily irritated.

Get prompt medical advice when blistering covers a large body area, affects the face, eyes, hands, genitals, or major joints, or causes severe pain. Fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, marked weakness, headache, reduced urination, or inability to drink can signal a significant systemic response or dehydration.

Increasing redness beyond the burned edge, worsening warmth, pus, red streaks, or pain that intensifies after initial improvement can indicate infection. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe confusion, breathing difficulty, or inability to wake normally. Babies and medically vulnerable people merit a lower threshold for professional assessment.

Ask how to dress open areas, whether a prescribed topical treatment is appropriate, and what changes suggest infection. Discuss medicines or skincare products that could increase sun sensitivity. Once the burn settles, review shade, protective clothing, and correctly applied broad-spectrum sunscreen so coverage does not depend on a single measure.
