Blisters and peeling skin on the feet

Short answer
Blisters and peeling on the feet can follow friction, trapped moisture, fungal infection, irritant exposure, sunburn, or an inflammatory skin condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern clue
- Toe-web itch and scaling can occur with athlete's foot.
- Daily care
- Dry between the toes and replace damp socks.
- Avoid
- Do not tear off attached blister roofs or peeling skin.
The short answer
Where the changes sit—between the toes, on pressure points, across the sole, or under a footwear strap—provides a useful clue, but a persistent or worsening rash may need examination.
Clues from location and sensation
Athlete's foot commonly presents with itch, scaling, cracking, or softened pale skin between the toes; it may also cause small blisters or peeling on the sole. Friction blisters tend to form where shoes rub and often feel sore rather than itchy.
Psoriasis can present with recurring, well-defined scaly areas and may affect other skin sites or the nails. Peeling after a burn follows the exposed area. Reactions to shoe materials or foot products may mirror the contact zone. These patterns overlap, so self-diagnosis from peeling alone can be misleading.
Foot care while the skin settles
Wash the feet gently, dry carefully between every toe, change damp socks, and choose roomy, breathable footwear. Cover rubbing blisters with a clean non-stick dressing and leave the blister roof attached. Avoid pulling away peeling skin or applying harsh antiseptics to raw areas.
Do not share towels, socks, or shoes when a fungal rash is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal product fits the pattern; steroid creams used alone can obscure or aggravate some fungal infections.
When to have your feet checked
Prompt assessment is needed if redness is spreading, the foot is increasingly hot or swollen, pain is worsening, pus or red streaks appear, or fever develops. Seek urgent help for rapidly expanding blisters, extensive raw skin, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rash that started after a new medicine.
Arrange an earlier review if walking is difficult, the eruption keeps returning, home treatment has not helped, or you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or weakened immunity. Small foot wounds can be harder to notice or heal in these settings.
Details to discuss at an appointment
Describe whether itch or pain came first, where the rash began, and whether new shoes, communal changing areas, foot treatments, medicines, or intense sun exposure preceded it. Ask whether a skin scraping is useful, what should go on broken skin, and how to prevent recurrence.

Questions people ask
Are blisters and peeling feet always athlete's foot?
No. Athlete's foot can present this way, but friction, contact reactions, burns, and inflammatory conditions can look similar. Location, itch, recurrence, and examination help separate them.
Can I exercise with a blistered, peeling foot?
Pause activities that rub the affected area or reopen raw skin. Resume gradually when walking is comfortable and the skin can be protected with dry socks, suitable footwear, and a secure dressing.
Should moisturiser go between peeling toes?
Thick moisturiser between moist toe spaces may trap more dampness. Apply it to dry, intact areas if helpful, but seek tailored advice for soggy, cracked, itchy, or weeping skin.
