A blistering rash on the face

Contact with a cosmetic or hair product, eczema, infection, heat, or a medicine reaction can produce superficially similar rashes. Pain, itch, distribution and symptoms elsewhere help separate them.

Contact dermatitis may present with itchy redness and small blisters where a product touched the skin. Atopic dermatitis more often brings dry, itchy inflammation, but irritated areas can weep after scratching. Infection may add pain, crusting, grouped lesions or fever.

A rash that begins after a new medicine and spreads beyond the face needs medical attention. Location also matters: eyelid swelling, eye pain, light sensitivity or lesions at the eye surface require urgent assessment rather than home treatment.

Stop newly introduced cosmetics, fragrance, hair dye and active skincare that may have contacted the rash. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid rubbing, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Do not pop the blisters or share towels.

Avoid putting steroid, antibiotic, anaesthetic or herbal creams close to the eyes unless a clinician recommends the exact product and location. Take photographs and keep product packaging or a medicine list available for the consultation.

Call emergency services for breathing trouble, faintness, tongue or throat swelling, or rapidly increasing facial swelling. Seek urgent care for eye pain, visual change, light sensitivity, blisters on the eyelid or nose with eye symptoms, or sores inside the mouth.

Prompt review is also needed when the rash spreads quickly, skin peels, fever or severe pain develops, or a new medicine preceded the eruption. Increasing warmth, pus, honey-coloured crusts and expanding redness can signal infection.

Ask whether the pattern suggests an allergy, irritation, eczema, infection or medicine reaction. Check whether the eye needs separate examination, which products to stop, and what can safely be applied to facial skin during recovery.
