Blister-like bumps on the skin: possible causes and care

They may follow friction, a burn, contact with an irritant or allergen, eczema, or an infection. Do not diagnose the cause from appearance alone, especially when the eruption is painful, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by illness.

Intensely itchy tiny blisters along the sides of fingers, palms, or soles can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Contact dermatitis may present with itchy blisters where a substance touched the skin. Sunburn can present with blisters over intensely red, exposed skin.

Shingles often presents with grouped painful blisters in a band on one side of the body, while chickenpox generally presents with an itchy eruption in crops across multiple areas. These patterns are clues rather than a substitute for examination.

Avoid popping or scratching the bumps. Wash gently, pat dry, and cover open areas with a clean non-stick dressing. Pause any recently introduced cosmetic, adhesive, detergent, glove, plant product, or topical medicine that may have contacted the affected area.

Note where the eruption began, whether it itches or hurts, and whether new crops are appearing. Avoid sharing towels and close skin contact if an infection is possible. Keep a suspected shingles rash covered and seek prompt advice because prescription antiviral treatment is time-sensitive.

Get urgent care for blisters with trouble breathing, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread skin pain, skin peeling in sheets, sores in the mouth or eyes, purple areas, or a rapidly spreading rash with fever. A painful eruption near an eye or on the tip of the nose also needs urgent assessment.

Arrange medical review for pus, increasing warmth, red streaks, worsening tenderness, recurrent unexplained blisters, or an eruption after starting a medicine. Babies, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity should seek early advice about a possible contagious blistering illness.

Mention pain versus itch, the first affected site, recent fever or illness, new medicines and skin products, sun or heat exposure, sick contacts, and any past similar episodes. Ask whether testing is needed, whether the rash could spread to others, and which dressings or treatments are suitable for its suspected cause.
