Blender and 3D Motion Capture in Rehabilitation

Short answer
Blender can visualise and animate 3D motion-capture data, but it does not independently diagnose movement problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Blender's role
- It imports, rigs, edits, and displays compatible motion data.
- Clinical limit
- Animation alone cannot diagnose pain or tissue injury.
- Data quality
- Calibration, tracking, conversion, and smoothing affect the result.
Direct answer
In a rehabilitation workflow, recorded marker or sensor movement can be mapped to a digital skeleton or model. Clinicians may use that visualisation alongside examination, symptoms, strength testing, and task-specific measures.
How the workflow functions
A capture system records movement, while Blender provides tools for importing compatible data, aligning a digital rig, cleaning animation, changing the viewing angle, and presenting the sequence. Conversion may be required when the capture system and animation software use different file structures, coordinate directions, or skeleton naming.
The animation is a representation of the recorded data, not a direct view inside joints or muscles. Calibration errors, hidden markers, sensor drift, loose clothing, rigging choices, and data smoothing can alter what the model appears to do.
Preparing for a useful session
Agree on the clinical question before recording, such as examining walking symmetry, a reaching task, or return-to-sport technique. Wear clothing that permits reliable tracking and tell the clinician about pain, instability, dizziness, fatigue, recent surgery, or movement restrictions before attempting the task.
Ask how the system was calibrated, which parts of the output are measured versus estimated, and whether repeated recordings use the same setup. Consent should cover video or body-motion data, who can access it, how it is stored, and whether an identifiable model will be used for teaching or presentation.
When to stop or seek care
Stop the capture task if it causes sharp or rapidly increasing pain, new weakness, loss of balance, dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, numbness, or a feeling that a joint may give way. The recording is not a reason to push through symptoms or exceed surgical precautions.
Seek urgent medical assessment for a new deformity, inability to use a limb after injury, sudden one-sided weakness, fainting, severe chest pain, or major breathing difficulty. A polished animation cannot rule out an injury or replace direct clinical examination.
Questions for your clinician
Ask what decision the capture will inform, whether the displayed angles are measured or inferred, and how uncertainty will be explained. Request a plain-language comparison with your physical examination and clarify whether the findings will change exercises, load, technique, or follow-up.

Questions people ask
Is Blender itself a motion-capture camera?
No. Movement is recorded by a separate camera, marker, or sensor system; Blender can then process or display compatible data.
Can a Blender animation show exactly what my joints are doing?
Not necessarily. Some motion is measured and some may be estimated by the model, while tracking and rigging choices introduce uncertainty.
Why use a 3D model in physiotherapy?
It can make a movement sequence easier to view from different angles, compare over time, and discuss, provided the interpretation remains tied to clinical assessment.
