Bleeding while sneezing: what should you know?

Sneezing creates a sudden burst of pressure and airflow. If the lining inside the nose is dry, inflamed, or scratched, a small blood vessel can open. Allergic rhinitis, a common cold, house dust mite allergy, or pet allergy can leave the lining more sensitive. Frequent rubbing, forceful nose blowing, sprays, or an injury may add irritation. A nosebleed does not by itself identify the cause of sneezing.

Sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of your nose firmly and continuously while breathing through your mouth. Spit out blood that reaches your mouth. After it stops, avoid picking, forceful blowing, hot drinks, and strenuous exercise for a while. Saline spray or a humidifier may ease dryness; use medicated allergy treatment only as directed by a clinician or pharmacist.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a facial injury, causes weakness or faintness, affects breathing, or does not stop with sustained pressure. Arrange a review if nosebleeds keep returning, occur from both sides, or begin after a medicine change. Fever, facial swelling, severe headache, or vision changes also warrant prompt care.

Ask whether dryness, allergy, infection, or a medicine could be irritating your nose, and which moisturising or allergy measures are suitable. Tell the clinician how often bleeding occurs, which nostril is involved, how long it lasts, and whether you bruise easily.
