Watery, Blood-Tinged Discharge Between Periods

The fluid may be vaginal or cervical discharge mixed with a small amount of blood. Its appearance cannot identify the source, so timing, associated symptoms, pregnancy possibility, and an examination matter.

Hormonal changes can cause light bleeding around ovulation or after a change in contraception. Irritation after sex, inflammation of the cervix, and sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia may also produce discharge with bleeding. Endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids can present with bleeding between periods.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and womb cancer can present with unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, but this symptom does not determine the diagnosis. A clinician can inspect the vagina and cervix, test for infection or pregnancy when relevant, and decide whether imaging or sampling is appropriate.

Book a medical appointment if the discharge is new, unexplained, recurring, or continues beyond a single brief episode. Note where you are in your cycle, the colour and amount, odour, pelvic pain, itching, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, urinary symptoms, and any chance of pregnancy.

Avoid vaginal douching because it can irritate tissue and alter discharge. If infection is possible, pause sexual contact or use barrier protection until you have received testing advice. Do not use leftover antibiotics, as treatment depends on the cause.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or escalating pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever with worsening pain, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Sudden one-sided pelvic pain with dizziness or shoulder-tip pain requires emergency assessment.

Arrange prompt evaluation for persistent watery or blood-stained discharge, repeated bleeding after sex, unpleasant odour, pelvic discomfort, or bleeding after menopause. These patterns warrant examination even when there is no pain.

Ask which examinations and tests fit your symptoms, whether pregnancy and infection testing are needed, and when results will be available. Mention when your last cervical screening was performed and ask whether your screening is due; screening does not replace investigation of current symptoms.
