Bleeding or Spotting in Early Pregnancy

Short answer
Light spotting can occur in early pregnancy, but any bleeding deserves timely advice from your maternity team.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
The colour and amount alone cannot confirm whether a pregnancy is developing normally. A clinician may use your symptoms, examination, ultrasound, and pregnancy-hormone blood tests to work out what is happening.
What spotting may mean
Small amounts of pink, red, or brown blood may come from the cervix, which becomes more sensitive during pregnancy. Spotting may follow sex or an examination. Bleeding can also accompany infection, an early pregnancy loss, or a pregnancy growing outside the uterus. Symptoms overlap, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
Brown discharge often reflects older blood, while bright-red blood is fresher. Neither colour establishes severity without considering the flow, pain, pregnancy stage, and other symptoms.
What to do now
Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or early-pregnancy service and explain when the bleeding began. Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount. Note the colour, whether the flow is increasing, any clots or tissue, and whether pain, dizziness, fever, or unusual discharge is present.
Until you receive advice, avoid inserting anything into the vagina if bleeding continues. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own; mention blood-thinning medicines and your blood group if known when you call.
When to seek urgent care
Go to an emergency department now if bleeding is heavy, rapidly increasing, or accompanied by severe abdominal or pelvic pain, pain focused on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, breathlessness, or feeling very unwell. These signs can indicate significant blood loss or internal bleeding and should not wait for a routine appointment.
Seek prompt clinical advice for any continuing or repeated bleeding, passage of clots or tissue, fever, offensive-smelling discharge, or cramping that is becoming stronger.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether your pregnancy location and development need checking, when an ultrasound would be informative, whether blood tests should be repeated, and which changes should bring you back urgently. If your blood group is Rh negative, ask whether the timing and circumstances of the bleeding affect your care.

Questions people ask
Does brown spotting mean the pregnancy is safe?
Brown spotting often represents older blood, but colour cannot show whether the pregnancy is developing normally. Report it and follow the assessment advice you receive.
Can an ultrasound always explain early bleeding?
An ultrasound may clarify the pregnancy's location and development, but very early findings can be inconclusive. Your clinician may arrange follow-up imaging or pregnancy-hormone blood tests.
Should I use a tampon for light spotting?
A pad is preferable while bleeding because it helps you monitor the flow and avoids placing anything inside the vagina.
