What should you know about blackwater fever caused by?

Damaged red blood cells release haemoglobin, which can make urine dark red, brown, or nearly black. The breakdown may cause anaemia, weakness, jaundice, reduced urine output, or kidney strain. Fever, chills, headache, and body aches may occur with malaria. Urine colour alone cannot confirm the diagnosis because other problems can darken urine.

Seek urgent medical care, especially after travel or residence in a malaria area. Tell the clinician where you have been, when symptoms began, and whether you used malaria prevention medicine. Blood tests, urine checks, and monitoring of kidney function and blood count may be needed. Do not use leftover medicines. Take small sips of fluid if you can drink, but do not force fluids during vomiting or confusion.

Go to an emergency department for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, seizures, very little urine, yellow skin, or inability to drink. These signs can reflect severe malaria, anaemia, kidney injury, or dehydration. If symptoms are milder but malaria is possible, arrange same-day assessment because illness can worsen quickly.

Ask which tests will check for malaria and red-cell breakdown, whether your kidneys need monitoring, what treatment is planned, and which warning signs require emergency help. Mention pregnancy, long-term conditions, regular medicines, and recent travel.
