Black Toenail Treatment and Care

A black nail after impact or repeated shoe pressure is often blood beneath the nail, called a subungual haematoma. A small, comfortable bruise can often be protected while it grows towards the nail tip. A newly injured nail with strong throbbing pain may need assessment because releasing trapped blood can reduce pressure in selected cases. Thick, brittle nail changes may point towards fungal infection and require confirmation before antifungal treatment. An unexplained dark band, especially one changing near the cuticle, needs clinical examination rather than treatment as a bruise.

After a minor injury, rest the toe, use a wrapped cold pack for short intervals, and elevate the foot if it is swollen. Wear roomy footwear and cover a loose nail with a clean, non-stick dressing so it does not catch. Do not burn, drill, or push a needle through the nail at home. A clinician can decide whether drainage is suitable, check for a cut or fracture, and clean or repair the nail bed when necessary. Nail removal is not routine for every black toenail; it is reserved for particular injuries, nail disorders, or diagnostic needs.

Obtain prompt medical care after a crushing injury, for severe or increasing pain, if the toe looks misshapen, or when bleeding will not stop. Redness spreading beyond the nail, warmth, pus, fever, or worsening swelling can signal infection. Book an examination for a dark mark that appeared without trauma, does not advance with nail growth, becomes broader, has uneven pigmentation, or colours the nearby skin. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced foot sensation, or immune suppression should seek early advice rather than attempting home treatment.

Tell the clinician when the colour appeared, what injured or pressed on the toe, how the pain has changed, and which medicines you take, including blood thinners. Useful questions include whether drainage could still help, whether imaging is needed for the bone, how to dress a loose nail, and what changes should bring you back.
