Can toenail fungus look black?

Oral treatment requires review of medicines and relevant health conditions.

Arrange prompt dermatology assessment if black colour appears without injury, forms a widening band, reaches the skin beside the nail, or is accompanied by bleeding, splitting, or a persistent lump.

Painful swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever needs urgent medical attention. Seek early advice for any suspected nail infection if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced foot sensation, or immune suppression, as unnoticed skin injury may become complicated.

Ask what supports a fungal diagnosis, whether a sample should be tested, which treatment reaches the affected part of the nail, and how improvement will be judged as healthy nail grows forward.
