What can black stool indicate?

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Iron supplements, bismuth-containing medicines, and foods with very dark colouring can turn stool dark without bleeding. Melena, the medical term for digested blood in stool, is often black, shiny, sticky, and unusually strong-smelling. Bleeding can arise from irritation such as Gastritis, infection with Helicobacter Pylori Infection, or a Peptic Ulcer.

The pattern matters: a single dark bowel movement after a known medicine is different from repeated tarry stools. Pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, or breathlessness can accompany blood loss, although some people have few early symptoms.

Review recent medicines, supplements, and foods, then describe the stool precisely to a clinician. Do not assume a normal colour change if the stool is tarry or keeps recurring. A clinician may check your circulation, examine your abdomen, and request blood or stool tests. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory painkillers or blood-stopping medicines unless a healthcare professional has told you to use them.

Get urgent care for repeated black tarry stool, vomiting blood, coffee-ground vomit, fainting, marked weakness, confusion, breathlessness, or a racing heartbeat. Severe or worsening abdominal pain also needs prompt review.
