Black stool and gastritis: what to know

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. It may cause abdominal pain, indigestion, heartburn, excessive burping, nausea, or loss of appetite, but these symptoms do not confirm bleeding. Blood exposed to digestion can turn stool black and tar-like. Helicobacter pylori infection, alcohol use, and some medicines can contribute to stomach irritation. A dark stool can also come from iron or dark foods, so a clinician may need to assess the texture and your overall condition.

Arrange prompt medical advice and describe whether the stool is sticky, shiny, or unusually smelly. List every medicine and supplement, including pain relievers, and mention alcohol use or prior stomach problems. Do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance. Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory pain medicines until reviewed, and do not self-treat suspected ulcer bleeding with household remedies.

Seek emergency help for faintness, marked weakness, confusion, breathlessness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or repeated black tarry stools. These may signal active or substantial digestive bleeding. Urgent evaluation may include vital signs, blood tests, and treatment directed at the source; waiting for gastritis discomfort to settle is not appropriate when red flags are present.

Ask whether gastritis is a likely explanation, whether you need testing for Helicobacter pylori, and whether an ulcer or another source of bleeding must be ruled out. Discuss safer pain-relief options and how to manage heartburn or indigestion.
