Black stool and blood

Blood can look bright red when it passes quickly from the lower bowel, while blood digested higher in the stomach or small intestine can make stool black, sticky, and tar-like. The source cannot be located from colour alone. Gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, and a Peptic Ulcer are possible upper digestive causes. Iron, bismuth-containing products, and dark foods can also change colour, but they do not explain visible blood or symptoms of blood loss.

Arrange urgent medical advice and describe whether the stool is sticky, how often it has occurred, and whether blood is mixed through it or on the surface. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including anti-inflammatory painkillers and products containing iron or bismuth. Do not take further anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician directs you. Do not rely on repeated home observation when the stool is tarry or bleeding continues.

Call emergency services or attend an emergency department for fainting, severe dizziness, cold clammy skin, marked weakness, breathlessness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or repeated black stools. These signs may indicate substantial blood loss. If you feel faint, lie down safely and have someone stay with you while help is arranged.

Ask where the bleeding may be coming from, whether your medicines could contribute, and whether you need blood testing or digestive investigations. Ask about testing for gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, or a Peptic Ulcer, and clarify which symptoms should prompt immediate return.
