A Black Spot With an Ingrown Hair

A curved hair may be visible beneath the surface, particularly after shaving, waxing, or plucking. Do not dig into the skin to remove it, as this can increase swelling, infection, scarring, and discolouration.

An ingrown hair curves back or grows sideways into skin instead of emerging normally. The visible dark point may be the hair itself. If the follicle has been rubbed or picked, dried blood or a crust can add a darker surface.

Inflammation may stimulate extra pigment after the bump flattens, especially in deeper skin tones. Razor bumps commonly present with ingrown hairs in shaved areas. Folliculitis instead presents with tender or pus-filled bumps centred on follicles and can coexist with an ingrown hair.

Pause shaving, waxing, or plucking over the irritated patch. Wash gently, apply a warm compress, and reduce friction from tight clothing or repeated touching. If the hair tip naturally reaches the surface, leave the surrounding skin intact rather than using a needle.

When grooming resumes, soften the hair first, use a clean sharp tool, shave in the direction of growth, and avoid repeated close passes. For frequent episodes, a dermatologist can discuss skin-care treatments or laser hair removal after considering hair colour, skin tone, medicines, and tendency to pigment.

Seek assessment if pain or swelling is worsening, redness is spreading, pus keeps draining, or you develop fever. A firm enlarging lump may need treatment and should not be squeezed.

Book a skin review if the dark spot remains after the bump settles, keeps returning in exactly the same place, changes independently of hair removal, or has an irregular outline or bleeding surface. Those features require identification rather than assuming every dark point is trapped hair.

Ask whether there is still a trapped hair, whether infection is present, and which hair-removal method is least irritating for that body area. Tell the clinician how you remove hair, how often bumps recur, what you applied, and whether similar spots form elsewhere.
