What should you know about black scaly skin on legs?

The location and symptoms narrow the possibilities. A ring with a scaly advancing edge can occur with ringworm; thick defined plaques can occur with psoriasis; widespread lower-leg darkening with swelling or ankle changes may relate to longstanding fluid and vein problems.

Dry scale without swelling may follow frequent hot showers, harsh soap, low humidity, or friction. Inflamed skin can heal with brown, grey, or black pigment, especially in deeper skin tones. Crust may form when scratching causes small amounts of bleeding or fluid.

Dark skin around the ankles with heaviness, swelling, visible veins, or slow-healing sores deserves clinical assessment. A black patch that is painful, cold, numb, blistered, or associated with a wound is not typical simple dryness.

Use lukewarm rather than hot water, choose a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a thick plain moisturiser after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear breathable clothing and avoid scratching, pumice stones, bleaching products, and medicated creams chosen without a diagnosis.

Check both legs for differences in warmth, colour, swelling, sensation, and wounds. Record when the change began and whether standing, footwear, shaving, a new product, or contact with an itchy person or animal preceded it.

Arrange a routine appointment when scaling persists despite gentle moisturising, spreads in a ring, repeatedly cracks, or occurs with ongoing leg swelling or colour change. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system should have breaks in the skin assessed early.

Seek urgent care for a suddenly cold or numb foot, severe pain, rapidly expanding blackness, a deep or foul-smelling wound, fever, pus, red streaks, or marked one-sided swelling. These signs need assessment for blood-flow problems, infection, or significant tissue injury.

Ask whether the pattern fits dryness, dermatitis, psoriasis, fungus, or a circulation-related change. Clarify whether pulses, sensation, swelling, a fungal sample, or wound assessment should guide treatment, and which moisturisers are safe on intact versus broken skin.
