What should you know about black hard lump under skin?

The dark colour may sit in the skin above the lump rather than inside it. It can follow inflammation, pressure, friction or previous drainage. A deeper lump may arise from a blocked structure, inflammation around a hair follicle, scar tissue or another skin growth. A boil often presents with a tender, inflamed lump and may develop pus, but not every deep lump is an infection.

Notice whether the lump moves under your fingers or feels fixed, whether the surface is smooth or broken, and whether there is a central opening. Location and change over time matter more than colour alone. A clinician may inspect and feel the area, then decide whether imaging, drainage or a tissue sample would answer a specific question.

Leave the lump intact and avoid squeezing it with fingers or tools. Keep the skin clean, limit friction, and cover any draining surface with fresh gauze. A warm compress may soothe a tender boil-like lump, but it does not establish the diagnosis. Record when you first noticed the lump and whether it changes in size, firmness, colour, pain or drainage. Do not start leftover antibiotics or inject medication into it.

Seek prompt medical care when pain or swelling is rapidly worsening, redness is spreading, pus is collecting, red streaks appear, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Arrange an assessment for a firm lump that is enlarging, fixed, repeatedly bleeds, forms a persistent sore, changes the nearby skin or remains unexplained. A lump near the eye or one that interferes with movement also deserves timely review.

Ask which layer of tissue appears involved, whether infection is present and what finding supports the proposed diagnosis. Find out if the lump should be observed, sampled, drained or removed. If an injection is suggested, clarify its purpose and possible effects on skin colour or thickness. Also ask how to care for the site and which specific change should trigger a return visit.
