What should you know about black gallstones?

Gallstones are solid pieces that form when substances in bile harden inside the gallbladder. Black pigment stones differ in composition from cholesterol stones and can be found during imaging or gallbladder surgery. The colour of a stone does not predict how severe symptoms will be. Some people have silent stones, while a stone entering a bile duct can cause right-upper abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, or vomiting. Obesity and some blood-related conditions can influence gallstone formation. A blocked duct may also irritate the pancreas and lead to pancreatitis.

If black stones were mentioned on an imaging report, arrange a GP Consultation to discuss whether they are causing symptoms and whether specialist review is needed. Record pain location, duration, relation to meals, fever, vomiting, and any yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not self-treat repeated attacks with restrictive diets. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and ultrasound or another scan chosen for your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, repeated vomiting, or pain with marked weakness. These features can indicate infection or obstruction. Emergency assessment is also needed when abdominal pain becomes intense and spreads to the back, because pancreatitis can require hospital treatment.
