What can cause black colour beneath a nail
Fungal nail disease more often presents with thickening, crumbling, lifting and yellow, white or brown discolouration; debris beneath the nail can look very dark. Repeated pressure from footwear or a direct injury may cause blood to collect under the nail, sometimes with throbbing pain at first.
Pigment can also form a brown or black streak. Some streaks are benign, but melanoma of the nail unit can present as a new or changing dark band. This possibility cannot be separated from harmless pigment by a photograph or colour description alone.
What to do next
Keep the nail clean and dry, trim it straight across without digging beneath it, and wear shoes with enough toe room. Do not drill, scrape or pierce the nail at home. Avoid sharing clippers, and disinfect personal nail tools after use.
Book an assessment if there was no clear injury, the colour persists, the nail thickens or crumbles, or nearby nails change. The clinician may examine nail clippings or scrapings before recommending antifungal treatment, because trauma and other nail disorders can resemble infection.

Seek prompt review for a dark streak that is widening, changing in colour or shape, appearing without injury, or spreading into the cuticle or surrounding skin. Increasing pain, redness, warmth, swelling, pus or fever can signal infection. After a crush injury, severe pressure-like pain, a split nail or difficulty walking also warrants timely care.
