Very Dark Facial Spots: Common Patterns and Safe Care

Short answer
Very dark facial spots can arise from excess pigment after inflammation, melasma, sun exposure, irritation, or another skin condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern clue
- Marks following acne or irritation often mirror the earlier inflamed sites
- Foundation of care
- Gentle products and consistent sun protection
- Reason to pause
- Stinging, peeling or new inflammation from a product
What the colour can—and cannot—tell you
Colour alone does not establish the diagnosis. Location, symmetry, surface scale, an earlier acne spot or rash, product use and visible evolution provide more useful clues.
Recognising common facial patterns
Flat marks exactly where acne, eczema or irritation occurred fit post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma tends to form broader patches on areas such as the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Discrete marks on sun-exposed skin may be sun spots.
Fine scale or itch suggests an active skin process rather than pigment alone. A lone mark that looks unlike the others or continues changing should not be assumed to be a cosmetic pigmentation problem.
Build a low-irritation routine
Start with a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and regular broad-spectrum sun protection, including shade and a hat. Avoid squeezing blemishes and stop products that sting, peel or inflame the skin, because irritation can leave deeper colour.
A dermatologist can match treatment to the pigment pattern and skin tone. Brightening medicines, chemical peels and picosecond laser treatment have different roles and risks; stronger treatment is not automatically better, and a test area may be considered for procedures.
When facial spots need review
Seek a dermatology assessment for a spot that grows, develops an irregular outline, contains varied colours, bleeds without being picked, repeatedly crusts or does not heal. New widespread facial darkening, persistent scale, pain or a treatment-related burn also needs review.
Get prompt medical help if a new medicine is followed by rapidly spreading dark or dusky skin, blisters, peeling, mouth sores, eye discomfort or fever.
Planning a personalised consultation
Ask what pattern the spots follow, whether inflammation is still active, and how the plan accounts for your skin tone and tendency to pigment. Clarify which products should be stopped before a procedure, what irritation would be expected and which changes should trigger an earlier follow-up.

Questions people ask
Are very dark facial spots always melasma?
No. Melasma is one possible pattern, while acne marks, irritation, sun spots and active rashes can also create facial darkening. Distribution and history help distinguish them.
Can I use a strong peel at home?
Unsupervised strong peels can cause burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially when the diagnosis and skin response are uncertain. Professional assessment is safer before intensive treatment.
Why are my acne marks getting darker?
Continued inflammation, picking, irritating products and sunlight can intensify contrast. Controlling acne while protecting the skin barrier helps prevent additional marks.
