Short answer

Very dark body spots have many possible causes, and their pattern, texture, timing, and evolution matter more than colour alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key clues
Distribution, surface texture, preceding inflammation and change over time
Safer tracking
Dated photographs taken in similar lighting
Avoid
Unlabelled lighteners, bleach and unsupervised strong acids

A clear starting point

Flat marks after a rash, bite, burn or scratch may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Other patterns can relate to sun exposure, friction, medicines, a superficial fungal condition or a distinct mole or growth.

Patterns that offer useful clues

Marks matching previous inflamed areas suggest pigment left after healing. Fine scale across the chest, back or shoulders may accompany tinea versicolor, although those patches can be lighter or darker than nearby skin. Sun spots favour exposed areas, while repeated rubbing can darken skin folds.

A single spot deserves separate attention when it differs from the surrounding marks or changes in size, shape, border, colour or surface. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause, particularly across varied skin tones.

What you can do safely

Note when each spot appeared and whether there was an earlier rash, injury, new medicine or repeated friction. A dated photograph in consistent lighting can help show genuine change. Use gentle skin care and protect exposed areas from sunlight to reduce further contrast.

Avoid bleach, unlabelled lightening mixtures and strong acids, which can burn skin and deepen pigmentation. Chemical peels, brightening treatments and pigment-targeting lasers require a diagnosis and a plan suited to skin tone; treatment can worsen colour when inflammation is triggered.

Changes that should be checked

Arrange an examination for a new or evolving spot, an irregular border, several colours within one mark, spontaneous bleeding, crusting that does not heal, or persistent itch or pain. Prompt care is warranted when darkening spreads quickly with blistering, skin peeling, mouth sores, fever or illness after starting a medicine.

Widespread darkening without a clear skin trigger also merits medical review, especially when it comes with weakness, weight change or other new symptoms.

Details to discuss at an appointment

Ask whether the spots represent pigment alone or an active rash, whether dermoscopy or a skin sample is needed, and which treatment could address the cause without provoking more inflammation. Mention all medicines, supplements and products used on the affected areas.

Questions people ask

Why do spots stay dark after a rash heals?

Inflammation can stimulate extra pigment, leaving a flat mark after the original rash settles. Further rubbing, scratching and sunlight can prolong the contrast.

Can a fungal condition cause dark body patches?

Tinea versicolor can present with finely scaly patches that are lighter or darker than adjacent skin. An examination can separate it from pigment left by inflammation and other causes.

Can cosmetic treatment remove dark spots immediately?

Pigment often responds gradually, and results depend on the diagnosis and pigment depth. Treating active inflammation and avoiding skin injury are essential parts of a safe plan.
