What does black stool indicate?

A dark bowel movement after iron, bismuth, or deeply coloured food may be a temporary colour change. Melaena usually has a black, glossy, sticky quality and a strong smell because blood has been digested. Gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, and peptic ulcer are conditions that can affect the upper digestive tract and may present with this symptom. Black stool does not establish a diagnosis; a clinician considers the whole pattern.

Notice whether the stool is merely dark or has a tar-like texture. Write down recent supplements, stomach medicines, meals, and the time the change started. Arrange prompt medical review for unexplained, recurring, or tarry stool. Avoid taking additional painkillers or stomach remedies to mask the problem unless a clinician has advised them.

Seek emergency help if black stool comes with fainting, pronounced weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or coffee-ground vomit. Such symptoms can occur when digestive bleeding is affecting the body. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.
