Black Beauty Spots on the Face: Moles and Warning Changes

Moles are collections of pigment-producing cells and can be flat or raised, smooth or textured, and light brown through very dark. A long-standing stable spot may be benign, yet a new or evolving black lesion deserves examination. Other pigmented growths can mimic a mole, so removal should follow diagnosis rather than appearance alone.

A dermatologist looks for asymmetry, an uneven border, more than one colour, and change over time. Comparison matters: a spot that looks unlike a person’s other moles may warrant closer evaluation even when it is small. Magnified examination can reveal pigment structures that are not visible in a mirror.

Facial moles may also become irritated by shaving, glasses, masks, or cosmetics. Repeated friction can explain tenderness or surface trauma, but persistent bleeding, crusting, or growth should not be assigned to irritation without a check. If the diagnosis remains uncertain, the clinician may recommend removing tissue for laboratory examination.

Take a clear dated photograph in consistent lighting and note genuine changes in shape, colour, surface, or symptoms. Protect the face with broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, and a hat. Do not cut, burn, tie off, bleach, or apply acid to a beauty spot; these methods can cause infection and scarring and can destroy features needed for diagnosis.

If a confirmed benign mole is bothersome or unwanted, discuss mole removal with a qualified clinician. Surgical excision may be considered when complete removal or tissue examination is important. Technique depends on depth, position, cosmetic priorities, and how your skin heals; every method can leave some form of mark.

Seek timely assessment for a new dark facial spot or one that grows, changes shape, develops mixed colours, becomes persistently itchy or painful, or looks different from your other moles. Bleeding without a clear injury, repeated crusting, or a sore that does not heal also needs review. These changes do not by themselves establish melanoma, but they should be evaluated before cosmetic treatment.

Ask what the spot appears to be, whether magnified examination or tissue testing is appropriate, and whether there is any reason not to remove it cosmetically. Discuss the likely scar location, pigment change, wound care, recurrence, and whether the whole lesion will be available for examination.
