Colour alone does not identify the exact ceramic formulation, manufacturer or bearing pairing. The implant label and operative record are the reliable ways to confirm what was used.

The bearing is where replacement joint surfaces move against each other. In a hip replacement, a ceramic femoral head may articulate with a compatible liner. Different systems pair ceramic with ceramic or with another approved bearing material, and components must be designed and sized to work together.

Ceramics are hard, smooth and resistant to scratching, but selection is not based on colour or hardness alone. The surgeon considers the joint, bone anatomy, implant design, component position, activity needs and compatibility across the whole system.

Before surgery, ask for the full material description and the reasons that bearing combination suits your circumstances. Discuss possible wear, noise, breakage, dislocation, sensitivity concerns and how the proposed components affect future revision options. These considerations differ among implant systems and patients.

After surgery, keep a copy of the implant card or operative details and follow the rehabilitation and activity guidance provided by your team. Do not use the appearance of an implant photograph to identify your own components. If imaging is planned elsewhere, tell the clinician that you have a joint replacement.

After joint replacement, seek urgent medical assessment for sudden severe joint pain, inability to bear weight, a shortened or visibly rotated limb, a fall followed by loss of function, or a wound that is opening or draining. Fever with increasing redness, warmth or swelling around the surgical area also needs prompt review.

New clicking, grinding or squeaking that accompanies pain or a change in function should be reported. Sound without pain may have several explanations, but your surgeon can decide whether an examination and imaging are appropriate.

Ask for the component names, bearing surfaces and compatibility of the planned system. It is also useful to discuss why this pairing fits your anatomy and activity goals, what restrictions apply during recovery, which new symptoms need review, and how you can obtain an implant record for your files.
