A lump under the skin after a bite

The immune response can leave a firm, itchy bump even after the surface looks calmer. Do not squeeze or pierce it. Check whether it is becoming larger, hotter, softer in the centre, more tender, or associated with spreading redness or fever.

Inflammatory cells and fluid collect around bite material in the skin, creating a raised or deeper-feeling nodule. Repeated scratching may thicken the area. Occasionally, bacteria enter damaged skin and form a boil or pocket of pus; boils typically present as painful, warm lumps that may soften or drain.

A bump noticed after a bite is not necessarily caused by that bite. A cyst, another inflammatory nodule, or an unrelated skin growth may have been present already. Basal cell carcinoma commonly presents as a slowly changing sore or growth, sometimes with a pearly surface, crusting, or repeated bleeding, rather than as a sudden bite reaction.

Clean the surface gently, use a cool wrapped compress for itch or swelling, and protect it from friction. Photograph the lump beside a familiar object for scale, then compare its outline, colour, tenderness, and surface over time. Avoid needles, forceful massage, and steroid creams on broken or draining skin unless prescribed.

A clinician may inspect and feel the lump to judge whether it is solid, fluid-filled, inflamed, or attached to deeper tissue. Depending on the findings, management may involve observation, infection treatment, drainage performed in a clinical setting, or investigation of a persistent growth. A steroid injection into the skin suits selected inflammatory lesions but can worsen an unrecognised infection, so diagnosis comes first.

Seek prompt care if the lump rapidly enlarges, becomes very painful or hot, releases pus, develops surrounding redness, limits movement, or occurs with fever or feeling unwell. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, mouth or throat swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling near an eye.

Book a skin examination if the lump does not settle, keeps returning, feels fixed, ulcerates, repeatedly bleeds, or changes without the surrounding bite reaction. These features do not establish a diagnosis, but direct inspection can separate a lingering inflammatory bump from an abscess or another skin lesion.

Ask whether the lump contains fluid, whether infection or retained bite material is suspected, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Share when you first noticed it, whether an insect or animal was seen, how quickly it changed, and whether there has been itching, discharge, bleeding, fever, numbness, or a similar lump before.
