Swelling after a bite on the hand

Remove rings immediately, clean a minor fresh wound, and arrange prompt clinical advice if the skin was broken. Human and animal bites over a knuckle or joint deserve particular caution even when the opening looks small.

Early puffiness may come from tissue injury and inflammation. Swelling that expands, becomes hotter or redder, or accompanies increasing pain can indicate infection. A deep bite can also injure a tendon, joint, nerve or bone, so the surface mark may underestimate the damage.

The clinician will want to know what caused the bite, when it happened, where the teeth entered, whether the hand was clenched, and whether sensation or movement changed. Vaccination history and information about the animal may affect preventive treatment.

Take off rings, bracelets and tight watches before swelling traps them. If the wound is minor and bleeding is controlled, rinse it thoroughly with clean running water, wash around it with soap, cover it with a clean dressing, and keep the hand raised. Apply gentle pressure with clean material if it is bleeding.

Do not close a puncture with household glue or probe it yourself. A clinician may need to clean the wound more deeply, test tendon and nerve function, assess the joint, and decide whether antibiotics, vaccination updates or imaging are needed.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading swelling or redness, pus, fever, red streaks, severe or escalating pain, persistent bleeding, a deep or gaping wound, or a bite over a joint. Go promptly if a finger becomes numb, pale, blue or cold, if movement is weak or sharply painful, or if a ring cannot be removed from a swelling finger.

Emergency assessment is appropriate if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, the hand is badly crushed, or there are signs of a severe allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue.

Ask whether the bite may have reached a tendon or joint, how to dress the wound, and what changes should trigger a return visit. Clarify whether you need preventive medication or vaccination and when hand movement can resume safely.
