Birth control and melasma

Short answer
Hormonal birth control can trigger or deepen melasma in some people, while sunlight and visible light can make the patches more noticeable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical appearance
- Flat, usually symmetrical facial patches
- Common amplifiers
- Hormonal exposure, sunlight, visible light, and heat
- Daily foundation
- Consistent light protection and gentle skin care
The short answer
Do not stop an effective contraceptive without planning another method. A clinician can help weigh the timing of the pigmentation, your contraceptive needs, and whether a non-hormonal or different hormonal option is reasonable.
Recognising hormone-influenced pigmentation
Melasma causes flat brown or grey-brown patches, commonly across both cheeks, the forehead, upper lip, or jawline. Hormones can make pigment-producing cells more responsive, but a patch appearing during contraception is not automatically caused by the contraceptive.
Heat and repeated light exposure can sustain discoloration even after a hormonal trigger changes. Pigment may also sit at different depths in the skin, which helps explain why fading can be uneven and why aggressive treatment can sometimes worsen darkening.
Protecting and treating the skin
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning, reapply during prolonged outdoor exposure, and add shade, a hat, or other physical protection. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides may help reduce visible-light exposure, especially for skin that pigments easily.
Choose gentle cleansers and moisturisers, and avoid rubbing or irritating home peels. A dermatologist may suggest topical pigment treatments or carefully selected procedures. Chemical peels, microneedling, skin-brightening treatment, and laser toning require individual assessment because irritation can leave additional pigment.
Changes that need clinical review
Arrange a skin examination if a dark area is new and one-sided, raised, scaly, painful, itchy, bleeding, changing in shape, or unlike the other patches. Those features are not typical of straightforward melasma and deserve a specific diagnosis.
Seek contraceptive advice if pigmentation is causing distress or began after a method change. Urgent care is needed for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, one-sided leg swelling, fainting, or new neurological symptoms while using combined hormonal contraception.
Discussion points for your appointment
Ask whether the pattern fits melasma, whether contraception could be contributing, what alternative methods fit your health and pregnancy plans, which skin products are safe for you, and how to avoid irritation while treating pigment.

Questions people ask
Will melasma fade if I stop hormonal birth control?
It may fade after a hormonal trigger is removed, but pigment can persist and light exposure can maintain it. Plan alternative contraception before stopping.
Can I treat melasma while continuing birth control?
Often, yes. Light protection and clinician-guided topical care can be used while contraceptive options are reviewed, although results vary.
Are lasers always suitable for melasma?
No. Heat or inflammation from a procedure may worsen pigmentation in some skin types, so diagnosis and careful treatment selection come first.
