Models can differ in channel controls, treatment modes, timers and battery arrangements. Identify the full model name on the casing and use its matching instructions; the brand name does not establish how a particular control should be set.

Lead wires connect the stimulator to adhesive electrodes on the skin. When the circuit is complete, adjustable pulses create a tingling sensation that can interfere with pain signals. Some units have separate channels, so each pair of pads may have its own intensity control.

Mode labels describe patterns of stimulation, not diagnoses. A higher setting is not automatically more effective. The useful level is noticeable and comfortable, with pads making full contact and the leads firmly seated.

Begin with the power or intensity controls off. Connect the leads, apply pads to clean and unbroken skin as directed, then raise each active channel slowly. Turn the controls down before removing an electrode. Store reusable pads on their liner and keep the unit dry.

Never position electrodes over the eyes, the front or side of the neck, irritated skin, or in an arrangement that sends current across the chest. Do not use the device while driving, in water or when asleep. A clinician should review suitability if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, reduced skin sensation, epilepsy, pregnancy or pain without a clear diagnosis.

Stop stimulation immediately for an electric-shock sensation, burning, new muscle spasm, dizziness, heartbeat changes or increasing pain. Check for crossed leads, damaged cables and poor pad contact only after switching the unit off. Persistent redness, swelling or blistering at an electrode site needs clinical advice.

Get urgent medical care for new chest pressure, sudden one-sided weakness, severe breathlessness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain after significant trauma. Using a stimulator to dull these symptoms could postpone the assessment they require.

Show the clinician the precise model and ask which mode, electrode arrangement and intensity range suit the treatment goal. Confirm how skin should be checked, whether any activity should be avoided during stimulation, and what change would indicate that the trial is helping.
