What should you know about biologics for Crohn's disease?

Crohn's disease can cause inflammation in parts of the digestive tract. A biologic works on a specific immune signal involved in that inflammation. Depending on the medicine, it may be given through an infusion at a clinic or an injection that you learn to use. The aim is to reduce symptoms, support healing of the bowel lining and help prevent further inflammatory activity. A biologic does not remove the need for follow-up, and the choice depends on your symptoms, previous treatments, other illnesses and infection history.

Before starting, your clinician may review vaccinations, check for current or previous infections and arrange blood tests. Tell the team about fever, a persistent cough, recent travel, pregnancy plans and every medicine or supplement you take.

Keep appointments for doses and monitoring, and do not stop or delay treatment without speaking with your gastroenterology team. Store an injectable medicine exactly as instructed and record doses so a missed appointment can be discussed promptly. Report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next review. Continue the bowel-care plan given to you, including advice about nutrition, smoking and other medicines.

Contact your treating team promptly for a fever, worsening cough, painful urination, a spreading skin infection, unusual weakness or symptoms that suggest your Crohn's disease is flaring. Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can need assessment regardless of whether a biologic dose is due.

Ask which immune pathway your medicine targets, how it will be given, what monitoring is planned and what to do after a missed dose. Clarify which vaccines are suitable, whether household infection exposure changes your plan, and how you will judge improvement or a flare.
