What should you know about biologic treatment for Crohn s disease?

Crohn s disease can cause inflammation in different parts of the digestive tract. A biologic blocks or adjusts a particular immune messenger involved in that inflammation. Treatment may be delivered through an infusion or injection, with timing set by the prescribed medicine. A specialist weighs bowel symptoms, examination findings, previous treatment, imaging or endoscopy results and your wider health before recommending it.

Abdominal pain and diarrhoea can occur during active Crohn s disease, but either symptom can also have another cause. The treatment plan therefore combines how you feel with examination and tests rather than relying on one symptom.

Before starting, tell your clinician about infections, vaccinations, allergies, pregnancy plans and all medicines or supplements. A blood test may be used to check general health and provide a baseline for monitoring. Keep a diary of pain, stool changes, appetite, weight and energy.
