What should you know about bio oil cradle cap?

Cradle cap is an infant scalp condition that causes greasy or dry-looking adherent scales, sometimes with mild redness. It is not caused by poor hygiene. Many cases can be managed with gentle washing and careful scale softening rather than a cosmetic body oil.

An emollient can soften stuck scales so they lift more easily, but products vary. Fragrance, botanical extracts, and multiple additives may irritate a baby's scalp. An oil left sitting under thick scale can also be difficult to wash away and should not be allowed to build up.

Scales may also appear around the eyebrows, ears, or skin folds. Widespread itch, weeping, sharply inflamed skin, or a baby who seems uncomfortable may point to eczema, infection, or another rash that needs assessment.

Wash the scalp with a mild, fragrance-free baby shampoo and loosen only ready scales with a soft brush or fingertips. If softening is needed, ask a pharmacist or clinician about a plain, baby-suitable emollient. Apply a small amount as directed, then wash it out; keep oils away from the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Do not scratch, scrape, or pull firmly at attached scale, because broken skin can become sore or infected. Avoid adult dandruff products, essential oils, and medicated creams unless a health professional has chosen them for the baby's age and skin.

Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads, repeatedly returns despite gentle care, or becomes very red, swollen, cracked, wet, painful, or foul-smelling. Yellow crusting, pus, bleeding, fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or an unsettled baby also warrants prompt assessment.

Seek urgent care if your baby is difficult to wake, has breathing trouble, develops facial swelling, or appears seriously unwell. Do not wait for the scalp appearance to improve first.

Ask whether the rash is typical cradle cap, which fragrance-free cleanser or emollient suits your baby's age, how long to leave a softener on, and how often to wash. If inflammation is marked, ask whether a short course of a specific medicine is appropriate and where it may be applied.
