A large ingrown pubic hair: safe care and warning signs

An ingrown hair curves into the skin or becomes trapped beneath it, causing a raised, itchy or tender spot. Friction, close shaving, waxing and curly hair can contribute. A very swollen lump may instead involve an inflamed follicle, boil, cyst or another skin or genital condition.

Inflammation can build around the trapped hair, especially if the area is repeatedly shaved, rubbed or squeezed. Folliculitis often presents with small tender or pus-filled bumps centred on hairs; deeper infection can create a warmer, more painful swelling.

Not every groin lump contains a trapped hair. Location matters: a bump on hair-bearing outer skin differs from swelling on inner genital tissue. Recurrent deep nodules, drainage, scarring or tunnels beneath the skin require evaluation for a chronic inflammatory condition rather than repeated home extraction.

Pause shaving and waxing, reduce rubbing with loose clothing, and apply a comfortably warm compress to the outer skin. Wash gently and keep the area dry afterward. Do not pierce, cut or dig for the hair; this can introduce infection and cause scarring or discolouration.

If a hair tip becomes clearly visible above the surface, avoid pulling it out by the root or breaking the skin. A clinician can release a trapped hair safely and treat infection when present. For frequent episodes, discuss shaving technique or laser hair removal after active inflammation has settled.

Get prompt medical care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, worsening warmth or pain, foul drainage, red streaking, or a swelling that feels soft and full of fluid. Arrange an appointment if the lump persists, returns in the same place, leaves scars, appears on non-hair-bearing genital tissue, or could be related to sexual contact.

Ask whether the lump is an ingrown hair, folliculitis, an abscess or another condition; whether it needs drainage or medicine; and when hair removal can resume. Tell the clinician about recurrence, scarring, drainage, recent hair-removal methods and any genital symptoms.
