Pause polish, artificial nails, and irritating removers so colour and growth remain visible. Treatment targets the cause: antifungal medicine is appropriate only when fungal disease is supported, psoriasis needs its own plan, and extensive damage may occasionally lead a specialist to discuss nail surgery.

Seek urgent care after a substantial crush injury, for bleeding that will not stop, or when severe throbbing pain follows blood collecting beneath the nail. Prompt review is also appropriate for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or a dark streak or patch that was not caused by a known injury.

Arrange earlier help if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced foot sensation, or weakened immunity. Otherwise, book an assessment when lifting is progressing toward the nail base, affects several nails, keeps returning, or comes with marked thickening or skin plaques.

Mention recent toe injury, long walks or running, tight shoes, pedicures, medicines, skin rashes, and changes in other nails. Ask whether a fungal test is useful before treatment, how far the nail can safely be trimmed, and how to protect the exposed nail bed during regrowth.
