What Big Sunburn Blisters Mean

Blisters form when ultraviolet injury separates layers of skin and fluid collects between them. Large or widespread blisters mean more skin barrier damage than simple redness. Do not deliberately pop them: the blister roof protects the raw surface beneath from friction and germs.

Sunburn commonly presents with hot, tender redness and can progress to swelling, blisters and later peeling. Symptoms may continue to develop after leaving the sun. A large burned area can also affect temperature control and fluid balance, particularly in a child or someone who is already unwell.

A blister that becomes cloudy, increasingly painful or surrounded by expanding redness may be infected rather than simply healing. Blisters after contact with chemicals, hot surfaces or medicines need assessment based on that cause, even if sun exposure occurred as well.

Move out of the sun and cool the area with a cool shower or damp compress. Do not apply ice directly. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing and keep the burn shaded. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on a suitable pain reliever based on age, pregnancy, medicines and health conditions.

Leave intact blisters alone. If one opens naturally, wash your hands, rinse the area gently, do not peel away attached skin, and cover it with a sterile non-stick dressing. Change a wet or dirty dressing. Avoid adhesive directly on burned skin, greasy home remedies and topical numbing products unless a clinician recommends them.

Seek urgent medical care for widespread or very large blisters, burns involving the face, hands, genitals or a major joint, severe pain, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, very little urine, marked weakness, fever, chills, or signs of heat illness. A baby or young child with blistering sunburn should be assessed promptly.

Contact a clinician if redness is spreading beyond the burn, pain is worsening, pus or a bad smell develops, or red streaks extend from an open blister. Get advice sooner if diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity could interfere with healing.

Ask how the open areas should be dressed, which pain medicine is suitable, whether infection is suspected and when normal washing can resume. Once the skin has healed, discuss sun-protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen use to reduce another burn and ongoing sun damage.
