Big Lump Under the Skin on the Face

Deep acne, a blocked or inflamed cyst, a boil, a benign fatty growth, salivary-gland swelling, and dental infection can produce different types of facial lumps. A hands-on assessment is needed when the origin is uncertain.

A hot, tender, red lump suggests active inflammation, while a soft mobile lump without skin change may arise from tissue beneath the skin. Cysts are often rounded and can suddenly become painful. Boils commonly present as tender inflamed lumps and may develop a pus-filled centre.

Location adds useful context. Swelling near a painful tooth can extend into the cheek or jaw. A lump in front of the ear or beneath the jaw may relate to a salivary gland or lymph node. Basal cell carcinoma often presents as a slowly changing surface growth, sore, or pearly bump rather than a sudden deep tender swelling.

Leave the lump intact: needles and squeezing can introduce bacteria, spread inflammation, and increase the chance of a visible mark. Wash gently, stop irritating cosmetics or grooming over broken skin, and use a clean warm compress for comfort if the swelling is superficial and tender.

Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting and note changes in size, colour, pain, and drainage. Seek a routine clinical review for a lump that does not settle, repeatedly flares, feels fixed, or has an unexplained cause. Management may involve observation, medicine, drainage, or removal depending on what the examination shows.

Urgent care is needed when facial swelling expands rapidly, closes or disturbs an eye, or is accompanied by fever, severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, swallowing trouble, or inability to open the mouth normally. Spreading redness and marked illness also require quick assessment.

Request prompt examination for bleeding, an open sore that does not heal, persistent crusting, numbness, facial weakness, or ongoing enlargement. Urgency here comes from the change or impaired function, not from guessing the diagnosis.

Ask which structure the lump comes from, whether the skin surface gives diagnostic clues, and whether dental review, imaging, drainage, or tissue testing is appropriate. Discuss how any treatment could affect nearby nerves, the eye, the mouth, and the chance of scarring.
