Big itchy bumps on the skin

How long each bump remains, whether it moves or scales, where it began, and who else is itchy are more informative than size by itself. Sudden bumps with breathing or mouth swelling require emergency help.

Hives present with raised welts that change shape and location. Contact dermatitis tends to follow exposure to a product, metal, plant, glove, or fabric and can blister or weep. Atopic dermatitis commonly presents with recurring itch, dry skin, and inflamed patches. Scabies typically causes marked night-time itch and may affect finger webs, wrists, waist, or household contacts.

Scale, cracking, rings, crust, pus, burrows, or a sharply defined edge can steer the examination toward different diagnoses. Skin yeast infection often affects warm, moist folds, while psoriasis and lichen planus have their own surface and distribution patterns. Several conditions can look alike after scratching.

Use cool compresses, a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, loose clothing, and gentle washing. Keep nails short and avoid picking, hot showers, fragranced products, and any newly introduced topical product. Do not share towels or bedding when an infestation or contagious infection is possible.

Take photographs before applying coloured creams and write down new medicines, travel, pets, insect exposure, sick contacts, and changes in soap or laundry products. Avoid using leftover steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal creams without guidance because the wrong product can alter the appearance or worsen some causes.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, faintness, throat tightness, or swelling of the tongue or inside the mouth. Seek prompt medical care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, blistering or peeling, purple areas that do not fade with pressure, eye or genital involvement, or pus with worsening warmth.

Arrange an appointment if the itch disturbs sleep, the eruption spreads, other household members become itchy, bumps recur, or self-care has not helped. Earlier review is appropriate for pregnancy, infancy, reduced immunity, or a rash that started after a new medicine.

Ask whether the distribution suggests allergy, eczema, infestation, or infection; whether a scraping, swab, or other test is useful; and how to relieve itch without masking the diagnosis. Clarify whether close contacts need assessment or treatment and how to prevent another flare.
