Large Dark Spots on the Face: Causes and Next Steps

Short answer
Large facial dark spots have several possible causes, so diagnosis should come before lightening treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clues
- Symmetry, borders, texture, scale and the event that came before the mark
- Daily foundation
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen plus shade and gentle skin care
- Avoid
- Scrubbing, picking and unlabelled lightening mixtures
The short answer
Distribution, edge shape, surface texture and what happened before the colour appeared are more informative than size alone. Sun protection is a sensible starting measure because ultraviolet and visible light can deepen many pigment patterns.
Clues in the pattern
Melasma often presents with broad, symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on sun-exposed parts of the face. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation appears where acne, eczema, a burn or another irritation has healed. Sun spots tend to be discrete, flat marks on areas with accumulated sun exposure. Tinea versicolor can present with patches that are lighter or darker than nearby skin and may have fine surface scale, although the face is not its only possible location.
A dark mark that is raised, crusted, irregular or changing needs examination rather than cosmetic treatment. Photographs in consistent lighting can help document evolution without relying on memory.
A careful approach to treatment
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and use shade, a hat and gentle skin care to limit further darkening. Do not scrub, pick acne or apply unlabelled lightening mixtures; irritation can create more pigment. If a new product burns or causes a rash, stop using it and let the skin barrier recover.
A dermatologist may select topical treatment after identifying the cause. Chemical peels, skin-brightening procedures or picosecond laser treatment may suit selected pigment patterns, but inappropriate settings or treating the wrong diagnosis can worsen discolouration. Procedure choice should account for skin tone, active inflammation and the depth of pigment.
When a dark spot should be examined
Arrange a prompt skin assessment if a spot is new and evolving, has uneven colours or borders, bleeds, forms a persistent sore, becomes painful or differs noticeably from your other marks. Also seek care when pigment follows severe inflammation or spreads despite stopping an irritating product. These features determine the need for assessment; the diameter of a patch does not establish its cause.
Questions to take to your visit
Ask what diagnosis fits the distribution, whether the pigment is mainly at the surface or deeper, and which home treatment is least likely to irritate your skin. Before a procedure, discuss expected improvement, possible colour changes, aftercare and how recurrence will be managed. Mention pregnancy, hormonal medicines, recent rashes and every lightening product already tried.

Questions people ask
Are all large dark facial spots melasma?
No. Melasma is one pattern; healed inflammation, sun spots, fungal changes and skin growths can also alter facial colour.
Can a chemical peel remove a dark patch?
A peel may help selected superficial pigment, but its suitability depends on the diagnosis, skin tone and active irritation. Incorrect use may deepen discolouration.
Why did a spot become darker after treatment?
Inflammation from a strong or unsuitable product can trigger additional pigment. Stop irritating products and arrange an assessment before trying another active treatment.
