Biafine for sunburn: what to know

Biafine is a topical emulsion used in some places for irritated or injured skin. Product instructions and approved uses can differ, so check the packaging supplied in the UAE and use it only on suitable, intact skin. Stop if it causes more burning, rash, or swelling.

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet damage. Redness, warmth, tenderness, and later peeling can follow; blistering signals a deeper burn. A moisturising emulsion can reduce dryness or friction, but comfort is not evidence that the underlying damage has been undone. Further sun exposure can aggravate the injury even if the skin feels cooler.

Move out of the sun, cool the area with a cool shower or damp cloth, and drink fluids. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser gently while the skin is still slightly damp. If you choose Biafine, follow its label, avoid the eyes, and do not put it over broken or infected skin unless a clinician has directed you. Do not pop blisters or pull peeling skin. Cover the area with loose clothing and use shade while it heals.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, worsening swelling, pus, red streaks, fever, dizziness, confusion, faintness, vomiting, or difficulty drinking. Burns involving the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a large body area also merit assessment. A baby or young child with significant sunburn should be evaluated rather than managed with a new topical product alone.

Ask whether the skin is superficial or blistered, whether Biafine is appropriate for that exact area, and which ingredients should be avoided with your allergies or eczema. If pain is difficult to control, ask which pain medicine is compatible with your health conditions and other medicines.
