BI-RADS 3 fibroadenoma

BI-RADS is an imaging assessment category, not a tissue diagnosis. A radiologist uses it when a feature has a benign appearance but should be checked again rather than immediately dismissed. The report's specific recommendation and your clinical examination guide what happens next.

A fibroadenoma is a solid benign breast growth made of glandular and fibrous tissue. It may feel smooth, firm, and mobile, or it may only appear on a scan. Ultrasound can assess its shape, margins, orientation, and internal appearance; mammography or other imaging may also contribute depending on the person and finding.

The category applies to the feature described in that report. It does not label every future breast symptom, and it does not replace examination of a lump you can feel. Prior images are valuable because the radiologist can compare size and appearance directly.

Book the recommended follow-up within the interval written on your report and use the same imaging centre when practical so earlier images are available. If you move or change providers, obtain the images as well as the written reports. Put the appointment date in your calendar rather than waiting for a reminder.

Ask which breast and exact location are being followed, what imaging method is planned, and what change would lead to biopsy. A biopsy may be suggested if the feature changes, if imaging and examination do not agree, or if personal circumstances make tissue confirmation more appropriate.

Do not wait for scheduled imaging if a lump clearly enlarges, a new lump appears, or you develop spontaneous bloody nipple discharge, new nipple inversion, skin dimpling, or a persistent change in breast shape. Arrange prompt assessment because new clinical findings need their own evaluation, even when an earlier scan looked reassuring.

Breast redness, marked warmth, swelling, and fever can indicate infection and warrant timely medical care. Sudden severe swelling after a procedure or bleeding that does not stop needs urgent attention.

Ask what features support the fibroadenoma impression, whether older scans show stability, and exactly when the next image is due. If you can feel the lump, confirm that it corresponds to the imaged feature. Discuss biopsy or removal if the finding grows, causes symptoms, or remains uncertain.
