The clip uses light passing through a finger to estimate how much oxygen is carried in the blood. It also displays a pulse rate. A reading can be affected by cold hands, movement, nail products, poor circulation or an incorrectly positioned finger, so one unexpected result does not explain why you feel unwell.

Use the screen as a monitoring aid rather than a diagnosis. A normal-looking result does not rule out a serious problem when breathing is difficult, chest pain is present or you feel faint.

Rest quietly, warm your hand and remove dark nail polish if it interferes with the sensor. Place the device on a finger as described in its instructions, keep your hand still and wait for the display to settle. Record the result with the time and your symptoms if a clinician has asked you to monitor at home.
