Betadine gargle contains povidone-iodine, an antiseptic intended for use in the mouth and throat according to the product instructions. It may reduce local germs and irritation, but a sore throat can arise from a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, strep throat, allergic rhinitis or acid reflux. A gargle cannot establish which cause is present, and it should not replace assessment when symptoms are severe or persistent. Do not swallow the solution.

Read the label for dilution, frequency and age restrictions, because formulations differ. Gargle for the stated time and spit it out. Stop and seek advice if it causes swelling, rash or marked irritation. Check with a clinician or pharmacist before use if you have thyroid disease, iodine sensitivity, kidney problems, are pregnant, or take lithium. Children should use it only when an adult and the product instructions say it is appropriate. Fluids, rest and gentle warm drinks may also ease discomfort.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, severe dehydration or a muffled voice.
