What should you know about Bepanthen nappy rash care?

Confirm that the exact tube is intended for nappy care, because products within the brand have different ingredients and uses. A barrier ointment reduces contact with urine, stool and friction but does not treat every cause of a rash.

Prolonged dampness, rubbing and contact with urine or stool can disrupt the skin barrier. Irritant nappy rash often affects exposed, convex surfaces, while the deeper skin folds may be less involved.

A bright red rash involving the folds, with small separate spots around its edge, can occur with yeast overgrowth. That pattern may need topical antifungal treatment rather than barrier care alone.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly. Clean with lukewarm water and soft cotton or a fragrance-free wipe, then pat rather than rub. Allow brief nappy-free time when practical and avoid talcum powder.

With clean hands, spread a thin barrier layer over dry skin according to the product directions. Remove visible soiling gently at the next change instead of scrubbing off every trace. Stop the product if it appears to increase redness, swelling or discomfort.

Contact a clinician if the rash is spreading, very painful, blistered, weeping, crusted, bleeding or not improving with careful nappy care. Seek prompt help if the baby has feverishness, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, has fewer wet nappies or develops rapidly worsening redness.

Ask whether the distribution suggests irritation, yeast or another skin condition; whether an antifungal is needed; which barrier product suits your baby's skin; and how prescribed creams should be layered.
