Benefits of letrozole in hormone-sensitive breast cancer

It is an aromatase inhibitor, usually considered when a tumour uses oestrogen to grow and the person's hormonal situation makes this drug appropriate. Its place in care and length of use are individual decisions.

After menopause, the aromatase enzyme helps the body make small amounts of oestrogen outside the ovaries. Letrozole blocks this enzyme. Lower oestrogen means less growth signalling for breast cancer cells that carry hormone receptors.

The drug may be used after surgery to lower the chance of hormone-sensitive cancer returning, or for disease that needs ongoing systemic control. It does not provide the same benefit for cancers that lack the relevant hormone receptors.

Take letrozole on the schedule prescribed and tell the oncology team before stopping or changing it. Report joint stiffness, muscle aches, hot flushes, sleep disruption, vaginal dryness or mood changes; supportive measures or a review of endocrine options may make treatment more manageable.

Because sustained low oestrogen can affect bones, the team may assess bone health and advise suitable weight-bearing activity, nutrition or medication. Share all medicines and supplements so possible interactions can be checked.

Contact the treatment team soon if pain limits walking or normal activity, side effects prevent you from taking doses, or you develop new vaginal bleeding. Sudden severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, facial swelling or signs of a serious allergic reaction require urgent assessment.

Do not assume that every new symptom comes from letrozole. A clinician can assess other causes and decide whether the medicine should continue while the symptom is investigated.

Ask which tumour test shows that endocrine treatment is suitable, why letrozole was chosen over another option, and what benefit it is intended to provide in your situation. Clarify how bone health will be monitored and whom to contact if side effects threaten regular dosing.
